How Tae Kwon-Do Helps Develop Leaders

Everything we do helps people become better leaders.

It begins on your very first day when we teach you how to shake hands. We apply a firm grip and look people directly in the eye. This creates a bond with a person and builds trust. Leaders convey confidence.

When someone asks, “How are you?” you’ll learn to reply, “I’m fantastic.” Leaders do not whine about everything going wrong in their life. People will not respect a person who constantly complains. No matter how bad of a day I might be having, you will never hear me tell you about it. That is negative energy, and there’s far too much of it in our world.

Our uniform, the dobuk, holds you to a higher standard. You’re wearing my name on your back, and I’m going to expect things from you. When you expect things from people, they will give you more. To give more, people will search and find their own path. Leaders find and follow their own paths.

When training, I’ll rotate people to the front row no matter their skill level. Being in the front row implies leadership. As the students get better, I’ll let them lead the class. When you feel like a leader, you’ll become a leader.

For those interested in teaching, our younger students can become Junior Leaders and adults a DELTA (Dedicated Enthusiastic Loyal Teaching Assistants) team member. As a teaching assistant, I’ll show you how to always find something good in a student and how to complement them. Slowly you’ll advance and help others with hand positions and stances. I like to teach Praise Critique Praise. For every critique a teacher gives, they must also cite two praises.

Everything we do helps create leaders. From our patterns instilling a spiritual confidence, to our open hand gestures.

We never point a finger and tell a person where to go, we open our hand and lead them.

How we train, communicate, and interact with one another…it all builds leadership qualities.

You see, you don’t lead by beating people into submission and making them afraid of you. You lead by helping people see a clear path to excellence. They will follow you until they want to take it on their own, and then they will lead someone else.

Put simply, we make everybody better.
