“My child has trouble focusing at school. Can Tae Kwon-Do really help?”
Very simply, YES.
Rita & Daniel
Rita and Daniel are autistic students of mine who had trouble focusing. They had difficulty looking directly into my eyes when I spoke. Observing from a distance I would catch them looking at themselves in the mirrors instead of paying attention. It was difficult for them to even make it through class.
Does Your Child Have Trouble Focusing?
Tae Kwon-Do is perfect for children who have trouble focusing. I am constantly reminding the students, “Eyes on me.” or I’ll ask, “Eyes on who?” and they’ll reply, “Eyes on you, sir.” The repetitive nature of this instills focus. It doesn’t take long for the children to immediately come to attention.
Our patterns and techniques require visual cues from me. I’ll walk about the dojang which requires the children to look at me, stay with me, so that they understand what I’m teaching.
This develops focus.
As the children advance we break into small groups where each group works on a different task or activity. We make the environment loud so that Group A will learn not to be distracted by Group B and so forth. As chaotic as it may sound, this is exactly the kind of environment children require to learn focus. Especially kids with AD/HD.
We constantly remind the students how martial arts is used in your everyday life and how it makes it better.
Your Child Will Bring These Skills Home
Focus is always taught to be transferred from the dojang to the home and school. In martial arts, we are very task oriented. This naturally spills into the home because a student who focuses on their instructor will also focus on their parents and teachers. Starting and finishing a task in the dojang soon equates to finishing your homework and chores.
Sparring in the dojang is a completely safe environment and there’s no better way to learn about keeping your focus than when someone is trying to punch or kick you. A student will quickly learn the importance of paying attention and understanding their surroundings.
Rita and Daniel are shining examples of how Tae Kwon-Do helps your focus. Their attention to details has made them two of my most promising students all the while performing better in school.
