How to Generate Power with Speed in Tae Kwon-Do

I have a student who served in the Vietnam war. His troop was stationed at the top of a hill, and every day his job was to jeep down the hill to get the mail and bring it back up to the camp. He always brought two Korean soldiers with him who knew Tae Kwon-Do, and would drop them off halfway down the hill to scout for the enemy.

When he returned to pickup the Korean soldiers, he found the soldiers had acquired enemy helmets and guns. My student told me, “These guys who knew Tae Kwon-Do were the toughest and baddest soldiers I ever served with.”

Tae Kwon-Do was developed in Korea by General Choi who brought together the best attributes from different forms of martial arts. Choi based his understanding of power on biomechanics and Newtonian physics. He learned the power of the strike increased quadratically with the speed of the strike, but grew only linearly with the mass. In other words, speed is more important than size when generating power.

Only Tae Kwon-Do encompasses the variety of striking techniques needed in self-defense. Whether using the elbows, arms, hands, knees, or feet, Tae Kwon-Do focuses on a three range fighting system: Long, Middle, and Close Distance.

You’ll learn all the necessary techniques:

  • Quickest twitch muscles
  • Strongest kicks and punches
  • Joint lock takedowns
  • Arm breaks
  • Chokes

In the real world, there are no rules to self-defense. It begins in the mind, staying calm, and assessing the situation. Tae Kwon-Do trains your body to be quick and powerful. You’ll be prepared, mentally and physically, for anything.
