Mike and Kristy have two beautiful children, Sean and Sophie. They first came to my school 12 years ago. Sophie was only 3, and Sean was this dorky little boy. Now, they’re both leaders in their schools and Sean is one of my Junior Instructors.
Watching a family grow and develop in my school is one of the greatest joys I have. Even though they were already a good loving family, they’ll tell me how surprised they were to see how Tae Kwon-Do has strengthened the bond between them. A mutual respect between adult and child developed that they would have never imagined.
The Family That Trains Together Bonds Together
Whether it’s a family, or just comparing an adult with a child, the benefits of studying Tae Kwon-Do have similarities and differences for each individual.
The similarities are easy to see. Whether you’re and adult or a child, when you study Tae Kwon-Do you will be:
- in the best shape of your life
- mentally and physically stress free
- able to defend yourself
- developing and building your self-confidence
- having a good time…seriously, this is fun stuff.
The beneficial differences between an adult and a child can be seen physically and mentally.
Physically, children are already pretty flexible. So as they train together, the adult will show a greater improvement in flexibility than the child. They’re both getting stronger but in different ways.
For example, a teenager can throw a wickedly fast punch that generates a lot of power, where an adult may not have the speed but will rely on technique to create power.
I’m about to turn 62, and my 18-year-old students can’t keep up with me. That’s our goal for the adults, to keep up physically with the younger kids.
Mentally, though, adults are stronger than children, and thus play a more dominant position in the school. Adults gravitate towards a leadership role, but they are often stress leaders or multi-tasking leaders. They’re not relaxed and comfortable, and it shows. Tae Kwon-Do will make you a natural born leader.
Our goal is to make leaders out of everyone. Children learn how to lead and adults will change the way they lead. For the teenagers, we’re trying to make them as mentally strong as the adults tend to be.
Strong leaders live a strong life.
