Let’s face it. We’re all ultimately preparing ourselves to survive a zombie apocalypse.
We exercise not just because we want to look good, but because these zombies might be the fast ones, and we need to be able to overpower them, or at least outrun them. It’s why “Cardio” is rule #1 in the movie Zombieland.
We buy cars for their speed. And houses to keep the zombies out.
And we train Tae Kwon-Do not just to gain physical strength and ability, learn discipline and respect, form lifelong bonds, and experience true achievement. We do it because if that zombie does catch up with us, we need to be able to take that sucker down.
The power that we teach you to kick and punch with at our school is devastating to humans. So, imagine what it would do to some crusty zombie. If this particular zombie puts up a pretty good fight, the evasion tactics that we train will help you dodge and counter.
And if somehow you’re up against some super zombie and your kicking and punching isn’t working, we teach weapons extensively. A sai or kama to the side of a zombie’s head will surely do the trick.
Perhaps the greatest resource we teach in Tae Kwon-Do, though, is situational awareness. If the zombies attack, you will know exactly where they are at all times. You will also know how many different things in the room that you can use to fight them with, and you will know how to use all of them.
I’m kidding, of course. Mostly. I actually don’t know anything about zombies or how a zombie apocalypse works.
But I do know that the world can be a scary place. There are threats all around, locally and globally. Tae Kwon-Do can prepare you for threats of all kinds, shapes, and sizes.
The tenets of Tae Kwon-Do are Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. I don’t know how courtesy or integrity would help during a zombie apocalypse. In fact, being courteous to a zombie is an excellent way to be eaten by one.
I can see self control being helpful during a zombie apocalypse. To survive, we would need to keep a cool head while others are losing theirs. Literally!
But Perseverance and Indomitable Spirit will get you through just about anything. It will get you through training, it will help you achieve black belt and beyond, and yes, it will keep you alive during a zombie apocalypse.
In that event, it may be only the martial artists who survive. This means that after the dust settles, the new pecking order may very well be Tae Kwon-Do schools. Perhaps this is where we have the greatest advantage of all. If it ends up being our students vs. students of other dojangs, there’s no doubt in my mind that we will come out on top.
So, if you’re thinking about signing up to join our dojang, now is the time. It just might save your life.
