If you are training at our Dojang, you are a special person. I am not saying this to just to make you feel good. Truly, if you have selected Master Gorino’s Tae Kwon-Do, you have made a decision to NOT take the easy way out. There are martial art schools that try to get everyone to join their school by trying to be everything to everyone. Others try by watering down their programs. Still others have no soul and continually change their curriculum to match societal buzzwords and trends. I get it. Business is tough. But it’s not all about business. It’s about you! As much as you have selected us, we have selected you. We want YOU. I have developed a culture in our Dojang that attracts and appeals to people who understand that achieving a Black Belt (or anything worthwhile), requires work, dedication and a “Pil-Sung” attitude. Pil-Sung means “certain victory through indomitable spirit and courage.”
To make a sword, the sword-smith takes raw metal, places it in fire and hammers it. This process is followed repeatedly. As the sword takes shape and an edge develops, more refined methods are used until you have a sharp, indestructible weapon that is truly a work of art. If you are training at my Dojang you understand that I will be forging your (or your child’s) spirit and character. I will be placing character-building goals, obstacles and challenges in your path to Black Belt. I will be asking you to do things you never thought you could do. I will get you in the best shape of your life. It will be rewarding and enjoyable. I want for you, what Tae Kwon-Do has done for me…but I work at it everyday…because the process (the training) is what makes us BECOME. It’s not easy, nor should it be. But you’re too smart to think easy is going to get you something credible and worthwhile. That’s why you chose us…that’s why we chose you.
Martial arts is more than just learning how to fight or to win battles. It is about being a good, moral person. It is about having character and compassion. You will certainly be able to fight when necessary and win. Self-Defense is very important. But you’ll also become a person who knows how to avoid those situations and be a positive force in your community. Fighting is a last resort and a serious option to choose. I will teach you how to choose wisely. Being a good person is the most important thing in the world. That’s why you chose us and why we chose you.
Be proud of your Dojang, your martial art family and your martial art heritage. Become a leader in the school and in your community. Take an active role and become proactive, not reactive. Yes, you ARE a special person. Pil-Sung!
