Believe it or not, I hope I never get in another fight for the rest of my life.
But if I do ever find myself in one, I darn sure want to win.
And I don’t just want to win, I want to dominate. I don’t want the fight to be even remotely close, or even fair, for that matter. I love my family, and I want to always make sure that I return safely to them. I also want to make very sure that I can protect them.
Of course, in Tae Kwon-Do, we teach you everything you will need to win a fight, if you ever find yourself in one. But that also includes the skills necessary to avoid the fight altogether.
Knowing that you will win the fight will keep you from fighting. It is simply not a challenge against someone who isn’t trained. There is also the knowledge that if you did decide to fight, your Tae Kwon-Do training makes you capable of inflicting terrible damage upon your opponent.
You don’t want to ruin someone’s life, even though you could. But, and more importantly, you don’t want to see yourself in jail because of it.
Part of the oath that we take as students is “I will be a champion of freedom and justice”. That starts within. It means you will treat all people kindly and with respect, no matter what.
Another part of the oath is “I will build a more peaceful world.”
If you’re training with those two ideas as a guide, why would you ever want to fight?
People that want to fight are cowards. They have too much to prove to the rest of the world. They don’t pick on strong people. They prey on those they perceive to be weak.
Three people are standing in a row. Two of them appear to be physically fit, are holding their heads up, and not backing down. The third is hanging their head and cowering away from the fight. That third person is going to be the target.
Training will help you achieve great physical fitness. It will also help you get into great mental shape as well. Those two things combined will make you feel better about yourself. When you feel better about yourself, you navigate the world as a more positive person. Positive people attract less friction and therefore find themselves in fewer arguments and fights.
The confidence and strength you build through Tae Kwon-Do will also result in you presenting yourself more strongly to people around you. This will prevent you from being picked on or messed with in the first place.
So, if you are someone who doesn’t think Tae Kwon-Do is for you because you don’t want to fight, you couldn’t be more mistaken. Like I said, even I don’t want to fight.
But that’s the thing about fights. They don’t care if you want to fight or if you’re ready to. They can just happen.
Tae Kwon-Do doesn’t teach you to want to fight. But Tae Kwon-Do will make you ready.
