My 7-year old son, Sam, was being bullied at camp. That’s why I sought out Tae Kwon-Do.
The reason I came to Master Gorino’s is because I remembered his commercials from when I was a kid.
The night he told me about camp, I Googled “how to deal with bullies.” Several results that came back said that Tae Kwon-Do was a good solution because it teaches self-defense, it builds confidence, it gives kids purpose, etc. So, we decided to give it a try.
The first school we met with was a bust. But then I remembered those commercials, and so I called and set up an appointment to talk about the three-week training session.
The thing that impressed me first was that when I came in for the first time, the receptionist, Nicole, told me to have a seat and that Master Gorino would be right with me. The first school I met with, I spoke to Mister Smith or something, but I knew he wasn’t the person my son would be learning from. I liked that he was so hands-on.
After Sam was enrolled for some time, we went to his first tournament. There, I noticed the Tigers program for the first time. The Tigers are the youngest students at the school (and easily the cutest). So I decided to also enroll my younger son, Kameron, who was only four years old at the time.
Kameron was with the Tigers for about a year before he graduated. Over the course of that year, though, I started to get more and more tired of just sitting there during class. Doing nothing while I was watching my two sons do all of this cool stuff. So when my youngest graduated out of the Tigers program, I decided to sign myself up as well!
As I’m writing this, Kameron and I are both green stripes. We’ve had the time of our lives so far.
The thing I like most is the way that they teach here. Currently, I am learning patterns. Instead of trying to get us to learn the entire pattern at once, we learn how to do each move of the pattern correctly before moving onto the next one. It makes it so much easier to string the whole thing together. For instance, I just finished learning the second half of my pattern today, but I am confident that I can go home and perform the whole thing, and it will be pretty close to perfect.
The other thing I love about learning here is the same thing that everybody loves: the people. The other students, regardless of age, are extremely respectful. I have never met teenagers anywhere who show as much respect to me and to each other as the ones I train with here.
I sure wasn’t when I was that age. I was terrified of adults, and never got along with the other kids. Now, even as an adult, I find myself unafraid of anyone, and I get along with other students incredibly well.
Especially with my two favorite classmates, Sam and Kameron.
