I see it time and time again. Someone walks into the dojang for the first time and they sense it right off the bat: there’s something going on here. Something big. Something special.
“How can I be a part of that?,” they’ll wonder.
“Sign up, and you’ll find out,” I respond.
Sometimes, people will ask, “What’s so important about Tae Kwon-Do?”
Is staying healthy for your entire life important?
Is being able to defend yourself and your family important?
Is maintaining good balance as you grow older important?
Is staving off Azlheimer’s and early-onset Parkinson’s disease important?
Is believing in and trusting yourself important?
Is becoming a better version of yourself important?
When you pursue Tae Kwon-Do, you’re pursuing all of these things, and a lot more.
I can’t speak for all martial arts schools, but one thing that I think is the hallmark of our dojang is that when you sign up here, you’re not signing up just to learn how to punch and kick. You’re not just signing up for self-defense. You’re not just signing up just for weight loss.
You’re signing up to become a part of something bigger than yourself.
When that begins to sink in, you start to feel connected to people. The camaraderie here is incredible. These are not just people you train with, these are your Tae Kwon-Do brothers & sisters.
Our Sabum Nim, (4th degree black belt and higher), are your Tae Kwon-Do parents. These are people that have your back. You can lean on them emotionally and physically, and they are going to take care of you. And, hopefully, you’ll be able to take care of them as well some day.
We eat together and watch movies together. We perform for each other. We build a community around one another.
And, of course, we train together.
Isn’t it amazing that we can train next to lawyers, airline pilots, and trash collectors? We even have a rocket scientist! You have no idea how satisfying it is to go up to him and say “hey… it’s not rocket science!”
Healthy people training with unhealthy people. Overweight people training with underweight people. People with tempers training with people who are meek. Aggressive people training with people that have been attacked.
We’re all in the same room. We’re all connected to each other. Together, we all belong to something much bigger.
You, too, can connect, just like we have.
Trust me, it’s not rocket science.
But it will make a lasting difference.
