Joining Master Gorino’s school in 2001 was the best decision I ever made.
I had always been interested in learning self-defense. Training at Master Gorino’s has certainly heightened my awareness and helped me feel safer, but there are so many other benefits that I’ve received from this dojang.
Overall, the physical activity has made me much healthier. Also, my confidence has improved dramatically, particularly in public speaking situations. I used to speak very quietly around people, barely able to even crack a joke. Now, I can speak in public with no problem. Tae Kwon Do gave me the confidence to overcome that fear.
We are a family here. We rely on each other. There are people here that I have only known a few months that I feel like I can count on more than some people I have known for many years. This is a result of the culture that Master Gorino and the staff has worked so hard to establish.
At Master Gorino’s, patience and kindness are two values that our staff truly embodies. Everything we do is in service to our students, and to the dojang itself. We are knowledgeable, and we take the time to make sure that you’re understanding that knowledge, and are happy with your training.
In other words, we make sure you feel welcome here.
And that is something that starts at the top with our leader, Master Gorino. No one cares about their students and their success more than him. He takes the time to get to know each person who walks through the door. He pays attention to every detail of a student’s strengths and weaknesses, where a student is in their Tae Kwon-Do journey, and how to help them achieve their goals.
Through Tae Kwon-Do, Master Gorino changes the lives of every student, both within the walls of the dojang and without. Many young kids come in for the first time and they’re rough around the edges. Within only about a month or so, you notice a dramatic transformation. They’re respectful and, more importantly, respectable. One could say they stop being kids at all, and become young adults.
I always tell parents that if they want to set their kids up for future success not just in Tae Kwon-Do, but life in general, to send them here.
Everyone benefits from what goes on at Master Gorino’s, and that is by design. The lessons we learn and teach are all aimed at not just making us better martial artists, but better citizens.
For instance, Master Gorino has an initiative called “Bullying Stops With Me.” The goal with this program is for students to apply the tenets of Tae Kwon-Do – courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit – to help keep other children safe from bullying.
The best part is that students are taught not to do this through violent means, but rather through simple acts of kindness and inclusion. If a kid is eating lunch alone, they’ll go sit with them. If kids are being picked on, they will reach out and encourage them to seek adult assistance. It’s a truly remarkable program.
As an instructor, my favorite example of the true family nature we strive for is during Black Belt testing. It is so gratifying to watch a student’s hard work pay off. And, better yet, of the kids and adults actually volunteer their time to help their fellow students out during this time, simply because they want them to succeed.
This school brings out the best in people. That is why I am proud of this dojang, and why I say that signing up was the best decision I ever made.
