Raising My Voice: Tamara’s Story
12 years ago, I sat in on my sorority sister’s Tae Kwon-Do class. Before that hour-long session was over, I signed myself up.
When I came in, I was very soft-spoken. In many ways, I still am! I also wasn’t very assertive, and didn’t have much confidence. Master Gorino spotted this right away. So, always in a playful manner, he would make me answer any question as loudly as I could. Even if I was just saying “Goodbye” to him as I was leaving. He would always make me yell it at the top of my lungs:
“Goodbye KwanJang-Nim!”
I believe that is what makes Master Gorino such an amazing instructor. He is tough on us when he needs to be. But, he can also be very open and kind, always willing to take the time to help when we are struggling with a particular form, move, or self-defense. As I was working toward my black belt, learning more advanced techniques like joint locks and proper striking points, Master Gorino was especially helpful.
I also appreciate the family-oriented atmosphere Master Gorino has created at this school. When you walk in the door, everyone is very welcoming. You are greeted with big smiles, and maybe even a couple of hugs if you are crossing between the children’s classes.
And, it’s just a good place to leave your problems. I know that if I’m having a bad day, if I come in train hard, and leave it all out on the floor, I’ll go back into the real world with a more positive attitude. It’s pretty remarkable.
Becoming an Instructor
Master Gorino’s training has made me significantly more confident. And, becoming an instructor here has only further increased that confidence. It keeps me on my toes, and has actually made me a better student as well. As an instructor, I now have to make extra sure that I have all of my forms down and information correct, so that when a color belt comes to me for help, I am able to give them correct information and proper training.
When my students feel confident and knowledgeable enough to help their classmates when they’re struggling, I know that I’m doing my job well. It’s the greatest feeling, and I wouldn’t trade my experience at Master Gorino’s for the world.
