What’s the Difference Between Tae Kwon-Do vs. Street Fighting?

My colleagues who teach Mixed Martial Arts and UFC style fighting love to debate me on which martial arts is best for fighting and self-defense. Good martial arts is good martial arts, but Tae Kwon-Do will take any good fighter and make them better.

They’ll tell me that 60% of all fights end up wrestling on the ground, to which I say, “Maybe, but 100% of fights begin standing up.”

Tae Kwon-Do vs. Street Fighting

Don’t get me wrong. Street fighters are tough, and they may have more experience fighting on the streets. But there’s a difference between a street fighter’s punch and kick versus a Tae Kwon-Do punch and kick… my strikes can kill you!

Tae Kwon-Do teaches us self-defense is about your mindset. Your mind and spirit need to be strong enough to avoid the fight in the first place. Remember, that is the goal.

When we do fight, we teach 3 different distances: long-range, mid-range, and short-range fighting. Each distance uses a different technique such as kicking, punching, elbow strikes, takedowns, joint locks, etc.

Tae Kwon-Do uses the legs better than any other martial arts, so we can defend ourselves from a greater distance during the initial phase.

People watch those cage matches on television and believe a fight is going to be this ground and pound stuff, and that’s just not the case.

Believe it … it works

Two of my students, a man and woman, were walking home from dinner when they were accosted by three guys. The situation escalated quickly. My students took down two of the guys so quickly that the third attacker ran off. They did exactly what I trained them to do. The next day they came to me and said, “This stuff really works! It was so quick and effective, we couldn’t believe it.”

Believe it…it works.

I’ve taught police, military, and FBI agents. They all tell me that my training is more effective than anything they were taught. There is no better self-defense than Tae Kwon-Do.
